The Auckland Saxophone Quartet came into prominence playing several concerts in the early 1990s. Jim Langabeer joined the group on tenor sax in the late 1990s, and continues the tradition on soprano and alto sax, along with the current members. Long-time members Nicola Haddock, baritone sax, Markus Fritsch, tenor sax, and Miles Tremlett, alto sax bring a wealth of musicianship and saxophone playing to the group. All four musicians are both experienced players and qualified music teachers. Over the last several years, the group has played many concerts and other functions, such as Arts Festivals, Jazz Clubs, and Summer Zoo events. The quartet has a vast repertoire of styles and moods ranging through classical and jazz, popular and concert music, and enjoyed the wonderful acoustics of St Andrews two years ago.
The ASQ’s repertoire includes some of the earliest saxophone quartets ever recorded such as That Moaning Saxophone Rag from 1914, along with classic jazz favourites, Summertime, and Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.
In contrast, the group also presents Sonata Number One by Handel, Prelude and Fugue by J.S.Bach, and works by Handel and Kabalevsky.
Original music by Markus Fritsch such as Rush Hour, and some hot solos on jazz favourites will be played. If you enjoy concert tango music, then you will love the ASQ’s heated version of Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango.
The group’s working title for this concert is “Celebrating Saxophones of the World”, and so items like Spain, Blue Rondo A La Turk, Georgia On My Mind, and A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square are all likely to be given special concert saxophone treatment.
